Senior Engineer – Highways

We currently have a requirement for a Senior Engineer to join our growing Highways Group. Candidates will be looking to gain invaluable experience within an established consultancy with a friendly office environment.  This role offers the successful candidate long-term opportunities for career development

The Role

  • Working within a multi-discipline team of engineers, technicians and other professionals to develop highway and engineering designs from concept to detailed design and construction.

  • Establishing the project delivery strategy, co-ordinating the design process and integrating with associated designs from drainage, structures, environmental and other disciplines.

  • Responsible for the production of highway designs and drawings to relevant standards

  • Responsible for completion of specifically assigned tasks to time and budget.

  • Assigning and checking the project work of engineers, graduates and technicians.

  • Ensuring compliance with Arup standards as set out in the company’s quality procedures.

  • Preparation of specifications, providing input to contract documents and supporting the delivery of designs through the construction process.

  • Management and procurement of surveys and other site activities including liaison with stakeholders and supervision of drainage contractors.

  • Provision of expert advice to assist our clients and developing strategies and solutions to help them to resolve delivery problems.


  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or similar. 

  • Must have chartered professional status 

  • Strong technical skills in the design of highway and general civil projects including proven experience in the documentation and delivery of D&B and traditional projects at various stages

  • Experience of the current Irish standards.

  • Ability to supervise the design of all aspects of highways design from conceptual layout to detailed design and construction.

  • Experience of design interfaces, e.g. geotechnical, environmental, drainage, structures etc.

  • Familiarity with 3D design tools including awareness of software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D and MX.

  • Ability to prepare and check reports and collate specifications from all parties to the project and to collect other data and statistics necessary for the preparation of progress and technical reports.

  • Ability to research information and data independently and ability to corroborate facts required for the resolution of contractual problems and disputes.

  • Awareness of the regulatory framework associated with planning and approval regulations/processes, together with experience of managing a highway project through the planning process


Experience in some or all of the following areas:

  • Alignment Design, Junction Geometry

  • Highway Drainage

  • NRA Design Manual for Roads and Bridges

  • Priority Junctions

  • Roundabout Design

  • Traffic Signs and Road Markings

  • Road Safety Audits

  • Contract document preparation

  • Geotechnical Site Investigation

  • Knowledge of MXRoads / Moss and AutoCAD an advantage

  • Excellent AutoCAD skill
