Our Client, The Medical Council is currently looking to recruit a Head of Corporate Governance & Secretary to Council on a two year FTC.

The role will report to the Director of Corporate Services on all matters pertaining to the management of the Corporate Governance and Secretariat functions.

Your duties will include:

  • Supporting the President, Council and its Committees in fulfilling their statutory roles. Report to the Chairperson on all Board governance matters and assist the Chairperson in ensuring relevant information is made available to the Board and its committees
  • Supporting and managing the transition of Council terms and the relevant processes involved including the election process and communication with the Department of Health regarding the identification of necessary competencies and skills for the board
  • Coordinating Council and Committee meetings and manage the preparation of meeting briefs and maintenance of accurate records on behalf of Council and it's Committees
  • Developing and delivering an appropriate Learning & Development Framework for Council members and manage the annual board evaluation process
  • Providing advice on the implementation of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007 and other relevant legislative and compliance requirements
  • Delivering on relevant strategic commitments
  • Be responsible for implementing, amending and up-dating the Medical Council's governance policies and procedures in line with best practice. In addition the Secretary to Council will ensure compliance with the relevant legislation and will fulfil all functions as set out in the Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies
  • Providing advice and guidance on any queries concerning the Medical Council's governance policies and procedures
  • Acting as Secretary to the Nominations and Development Committee and any other committees and working groups that may be assigned to you
  • Manage and support the provision of Freedom of Information and Data Protection requests and the management of the information governance function to include records management and retention
  • Responsible for significant line management, motivation and development of staff

To be considered for this role, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Min. 6 years relevant experience in a similar role within a professional body, a health service provider or similar organisation is desirable.
  • A third level qualification in a relevant field is essential.
  • An ability to demonstrate and manage a significant workload in addition to well-developed interpersonal, leadership, communication and IT skills.
  • A good knowledge of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007 in addition to the Medical Council's remit and functions
  • Experience of Corporate Governance at board and executive levels within the public sector
  • Experience with Information Governance, specifically Freedom of information and Data Protection requirements
  • Experience working with diverse teams
  • Experience of managing a team and a significant workload
