Bus Éireann is a commercial semi-state organisation providing both public and commercial transport services throughout Ireland. Its products include city services and commuter/rural services both of which receive some state funding. Its longer distance inter-city product, Expressway, is an entirely commercial operation. Bus Éireann is also responsible for the provision of School Transport Services on behalf of the Department of Education & Skills, transporting 114,000 students to/from school each day during the academic year.
Bus Éireann is undergoing a period of extensive change and faces many of the challenges that such change brings. The National Transport Authority (NTA), Bus Éireann’s regulatory body, has identified 10% of Bus Éireann’s routes which will be open to public tendering in 2017. There are plans to re-structure Expressway which are currently under review and re-structuring of School Transport is also an issue due to EU legislation. Competition continues to grow in the transport market placing pressure on customer growth and retention at a time when there are on-going funding restrictions
Bus Eireann now wishes to appoint a Chief Executive who will report to the Board and be responsible for the strategic leadership of the organisation, by contributing to the shaping of public transport policy, and implementing strategies and plans to provide an efficient public road transport system throughout Ireland. The Chief Executive will lead the organisation and senior management team and will drive operations and change programmes to meet the challenges/opportunities for Bus Eireann to achieve optimal financial outcomes. He/she will also manage strategic relationships with key external stakeholders, including other companies within the CIE Group, Government Departments, the National Transport Authority, the political system, local communities, commercial interests, customers and the media.
This important position calls for a senior executive with experience of leading a large complex commercial organisation in a dynamic environment. A sound knowledge of the public transport sector and transport policy is desirable.
He/she must be a proven business leader with a track record of managing stakeholder relationships at the highest level, whilst meeting challenging targets in a multi-dimensional unionised environment.
Remuneration and conditions of employment for this position are in accordance with established government guidelines.
Closing date for applications is 20th October 2017.
