The Medical Council is the statutory regulatory body for doctors in Ireland. It protects the public by promoting the highest professional standards amongst registered medical practitioners. The Council is with a doctor from the day they enter medical school until the day they retire by setting and monitoring educational standards, through to registration, specialist training and continuous professional development. The Council also deals with complaints about a doctor, where they are investigated and if deemed of a serious nature, referred to a fitness to practise inquiry.

The Medical Council is governed by the Medical Practitioners Act 2007, as amended by subsequent legislation.


The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will provide strategic leadership to the Medical Council and will ensure that it is effective in all areas of its responsibilities including regulation, governance, statutory, procedural and legal matters. Reporting to the President, the CEO will work to further  improve overall standards, fulfilling the remit to ensure the public is protected and doctors are supported.

Building upon a clear vision and ambition for the Medical Council, the CEO will ensure that strong and effective working relationships are maintained with medical practitioners and stakeholders and that the Council is an advocate for positive change and progression. The CEO will play a key role in the investigation of complaints against registered medical practitioners and will be responsible for presenting disciplinary complaints to the Council.


This position requires an experienced leader with a proven track record of strategy development and implementation in a relevant business environment. The successful candidate will possess demonstrable visionary, leadership and management skills and will have excellent networking and stakeholder management abilities. He/she will have delivered significant results in terms of organisation performance, transformation and policy development. A professional qualification or primary degree in a relevant discipline is required and a leadership/management qualification will be an advantage. An understanding of regulation, medical practice, healthcare or an equivalent area is desirable.
