The Secretary General
The Department of Justice and Equality has responsibility for public policy and administration in respect of justice, public safety, civil law, national security, equality and immigration issues. Its vision, as set out in the Strategy Statement 2016- 2019, is for “a safe, fair and inclusive Ireland”, to advance community and national security, promote justice and equality and safeguard human rights.
The Department employs over 2,700 people directly and has responsibility for the Justice and Equality sector with over 25,000 staff and a budget of just under €3 billion. As with many other public sector organisations, the Department’s staff are primarily working remotely during the current Covid-19 pandemic.
The Secretary General
The Secretary General is the Administrative Head of the Department, the Accounting Officer and has overall management responsibility for Managing the Department, implementing Government policies appropriate to the Department, providing advice to the Minister and using resources so as to meet the requirements of the Comptroller and Auditor General, preparing Statements of Strategy for submission to the Minister as well as ensuring proper use of resources and the provision of cost-effective public services.
The successful candidate:
- will have a well-developed capacity to lead a large group of staff and network of agencies in a complex and demanding environment.
- will have a record of achievement in his/her career to date demonstrating excellent senior management and leadership experience in a multifunctional organisation of significant complexity and scale.
- will have the ability to formulate and communicate a long term vision for the sector and for the organisation.
- will have strong interpersonal skills, including the capacity to manage critical relationships using judgment, vision and leadership.
This is a Top Level Appointments Committee position.
