The overarching purpose of this role is to support the Local Managing Partner and the senior management team in the running of the Dublin business, as well as leading the local Finance Team, covering the full life cycle of the legal practice, from matter set-up to management of lock-up, to business planning, budgeting/forecast, analysis as well as performance management and process improvement.  This hands-on role is also critical to supporting commercial decision making on projects and initiatives such as office moves, lateral hires, new client acquisition and pricing.

Role Responsibility

Operational Delivery

Supporting the Local Partnership in the day to day running of operational aspects of the Firm (e.g. ensuring all aspects of Operational Finance are managed properly, including management of the WIP, setting fee earner targets, identifying and allocating resources, procuring appropriate services from Business Services, providing input as required to pitches and tenders)

Working with the Local Managing Partner and the International Finance Business Partner in Bristol (UK) to assist monitoring and managing ongoing performance against a range of financial and operational KPIs in line with budget (e.g. billing, revenue generation, cost management, gross profit, utilisation and realisation, and lock-up management,) providing and commissioning regular and ad hoc reporting and analysis as required

Working with HR Business Partners and Finance Business Partners to provide input for business as usual activities and processes including salary review, bonus submissions, promotions, recruitment and integration, performance reviews

Process Improvement

Identifying areas where business performance within the Cluster(s) could be improved and work with the Local Managing Partner and business services to compile business cases for change projects and process improvements. Ongoing support with the overarching firm’s target of reducing the current lock-up days.

Acting as local firm sponsor as required for process improvement projects, ensuring that the appropriate skills are deployed in order to bring about the required improvement in processes, technology and/or working practices.

Decision Support

Work with Project Managers on preparation and review of Business Cases (e.g. for lateral hires, office moves etc.)

Understand the business needs for individual projects and pitches in order to support appropriate costing

Finance, Accounting, Tax and Audit Support

Proactively manage the different cycles within the Finance function, including:

Adhering to the Group Accounting Policy and how it impacts results, ensuring month-end deadlines are met

Being aware of the tax rules in Ireland (VAT, PSWT, Income Tax and PAYE, amongst others) to support the Group Tax team with business queries related to tax preparation and submission

Proactively managing the annual statutory audits as well as supporting Group Finance during the annual year-end audit

Business Partnering

Provide support for and input to the annual budgeting and reforecasting processes, working in conjunction with the Cluster Head, Team or Practice Leaders and Finance Business Partner, working directly with the Local Partners and Business Services Heads on each of the Budget areas

Providing analysis and support to senior stakeholders and various others within the Firm

Advising and challenging, where appropriate, in order to add value in terms of the analysis and commentary produced

Communicating and translating complex financial ideas to non-finance colleagues

Overseeing and supporting the local finance team to ensure appropriate accounting for both business as usual and individual projects 

Interaction with key stakeholders, including Heads of Business Service Lines, the Chief Operating Officer, International Development Director and other senior members of the Finance Management Team

The Ideal Candidate

A self-starter with a hands-on approach and with the ability to work under minimal supervision

Qualified accountant (CIMA, ACA, ACCA or equivalent) with 4+ years PQE

Strong finance and analytical skills, including experience of providing monthly management accounts and value adding commentary

Strong experience of working with complex Excel models, manipulating large amounts of data and preparing summaries for wider use

Strong and confident communication skills, both orally and in writing, with the ability to interact with senior members of the business and build strong working relationships with stakeholders

Organised and able to handle multiple demands and deadlines simultaneously

Ability to convey complex financial and accounting concepts in a clear and straightforward manner

The ability to work collaboratively with the business and challenge where appropriate

Experience in budgeting and forecasting discussions with senior business managers (experience of Finance Business Partnering gained in a professional services environment within a large finance function would be a strong advantage)
