Civil Service Credit Union

About Civil Service Credit Union

The Credit Union movement in Ireland was founded by three Civil and Public Servants in the late 1950’s. They were Seamus P. Mac Eoin, Sean Forde and Nora Herlihy. The original Civil Service Credit Union was one of the very early credit unions to be set up in 1960.

This Credit Union became the Eircom Credit Union when the Department of Posts and Telegraphs went semi - state in 1984. However a new Civil Service Credit Union was founded by a group of serving civil servants who met together in Liberty Hall in June 1990. Following this meeting a Study Group was set up and after 18 months it was finally approved by the Irish League of Credit Unions that a credit union for civil servants could be set up.
