Sightsavers is a leading international NGO working to prevent avoidable blindness, restore sight and advocate for social inclusion and equal rights for people with disabilities.  Operating programmes in more than 30 developing countries, Sightsavers tackles the main causes of avoidable blindness including cataract and a group of neglected tropical diseases such as river blindness and trachoma. Sightsavers Ireland is part of a network of eight countries that promote and develop the work of Sightsavers internationally. The organisation is a Programme Grant Partner of Irish Aid and also receives funding from the EU Commission.

Chief Executive

Reporting to the Board, the Chief Executive is the senior executive with responsibility for the leadership of the organisation nationally and will be responsible for executive leadership and operational management in accordance with the mission, goals, objectives and plans approved by the Board.

The appointee will lead, manage, support and inspire staff members and other stakeholders in the fulfilment of their responsibilities and will ensure that all activity complies with the organisation’s ethos.  The appointee will have the necessary vision, in conjunction with the Board and the management team, to build and develop the strategies required to meet the needs of all stakeholders. The Chief Executive will work closely with Sightsavers Global, headquartered in the UK, through which all funds raised are channelled to programmes in more than 25 countries.

In addition to possessing a strong affinity with the objectives of the organisation, the appointee will have proven commercial and organisational development skills, coupled with a track record of leadership and management.  A critical competence for the CEO will be the demonstrable ability to lead the organisation’s fundraising programmes and deliver on all associated key measures and financial targets within a challenging and competitive environment.  The successful candidate must possess the ability to network and influence the development sector at the highest level and to advocate on behalf of the organisation. Further competencies will include strategic thinking ability, knowledge of corporate governance and financial and risk management.
